Tanya Saunders, CityWatch’s Indigenous Liaison Officer, is a proud Gundjitmara woman with 18 years of experience in Security. Gaining her licence in 2006, Tanya’s first shift was as a guard at a Justin Timberlake concert. Since then she’s had many placements including at the world-renowned MCG, with occasional work at the Cricket World Cup and busy Melbourne Central.

What do you believe CityWatch are doing differently in terms of Indigenous inclusion/relationships?
CityWatch are trying to be the best they can and picking up great people like yourself and me, making it a great place for all to work. The goal is to get more Indigenous guards on board so cummon you mob; come join us now.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
I love the early morning starts, late 12 hour shifts – every day for me is different. I love the company and friends I’ve made along the way, and helping CityWatch move forward on Indigenous issues in future. Security is always needed, it’s essential, and I just love everything about it.

What do you wish more non-Indigenous people knew about Australian Indigenous cultures? I believe they’re starting to teach our culture in schools now and that’s where it has to start; from primary schools to secondary schools. It starts at home, it starts in schools and the more we talk, the more our culture is kept, passed on and known about.

What's one belief that's stuck with you or that you use in daily life?

Something I come back to is that ‘Security is everyone’s business’ . It’s not just because I’ve got a little card in my pocket that I am concerned with security; safety is everybody’s business.

4. Less Than Zero Trust: Zero Trust is a concept that emphasises the need for continuous verification; it works on the basis that no activity can be assumed to be legitimate without a multifaceted verification system. In 2024, we expect Zero Trust interactions to evolve from a purely technical model to a more comprehensive approach, backed by continuous AI-powered real-time authentication and activity monitoring. At some point it will mitigate risks presented by remote workers and external organisations.
The logistics of Zero Trust will continue to change as systems grow in complexity.

5. Posture Checks/Management: The cybersecurity equivalent of a medical for digital assets, digital asset collections, and entire businesses; Posture Management’s primary objective is to identify and address negative outcomes before they escalate into significant issues. What does your day at work entail? Providing the site with appropriate security coverage 24/7, maintaining a high level of customer service at all times, meeting contract terms and conditions.

What is the most interesting aspect of your role or the thing you like the most about it? Making sure the site is maintained at all times and every one feels safe while visiting and working with security present.

What kind of work have you done before? Are there any similarities between that and what you do at City Watch? I’ve worked in forensic psychiatric care and tyre service retail management, which enable you to have good communication and develop hands on skills, which are always very important.

What is your proudest work-related achievement? Been chosen to be a bodyguard for formula one driver Sir Lewis Hamilton (who drives for Mercedes), for a day may years ago at South Wharf.

What kind of skills do you believe it takes to become a good guard? Being a good listener, have excellent communication and skills gained from on the job experience. It helps to be confident at all times, while treating everyone as a mirror image

After a stressful shift what do you do to wind down? Due to being on call 24/7 daily, I try and keep fit by either running, walking, bike riding or taking part in any other outdoor physical activities. I often wind down with reality shows like SAS Australia, Pawn stars, and enjoy the AFL show Front Bar. And I time with my family.

What specifically do you like about working at City Watch? Is it the culture, the people, the challenges etc? All of the above. CityWatch’s staff are friendly and professional 24/7. I’ve been with CityWatch coming up around 15 years and 14 of those have been in Health Care.

The Importance of OH&S in the Workplace

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2017-18, 563 600 people (4.2 per cent of working people in Australia), suffered a work-related injury or illness. Sixty per cent of these resulted in an employee taking some time off work, while 27 per cent of injured parties received workers’ compensation.

Natasha M has worked as one of CityWatch Security’s guards for nearly a year, based at the picturesque Martha Cove site. A committed guard and hard worker, Natasha is also studying certification in Government Investigations.

The work of a site or static guard like Natasha often involves long stretches of time being stationary; either in a patrol car or facing a monitor. This presents a potential health hazard for each guard. Natasha describes how she addresses this issue and what she enjoys about her work at CityWatch Security below.

What does a normal work day entail for you?

‘A normal day for me starts on-site 30 mins before my shift; I touch base with whoever is in the office to find out what's been going on over the last 24 hours. Then I’ll read up on any notes (such as incident reports) and sign documents as needed.

After that I head out and try and do a full patrol of the site. I start on wand points ( sites where guards use hand-held Smart WANDs) followed by foot patrols, using one of our patrol cars to cover the whole site. I don't go too far from the car in case there is an issue that I need to attend.

I take a lunch break and then go back out on patrol again, but this time I go the opposite way around. I will door knock to see if residents are ok. I tend to leave the big pontoons ( a flat boat that relies on floats to remain buoyant ) until I’m just about finish my shift. I tend to be back in the office about 30 mins before finishing my shift to do a handover’.

What do you do on shifts to maintain your physical and mental health?

‘In the office I tend to stand up more than sit, especially when working overnight, plus I take in some hand weights.

Out on the road I make sure to be hydrated; I’ll take two drinks and stop more often or for longer, I also sing to myself… You also need to eat correctly and sleep properly; then everything should be OK’.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

‘I enjoy the amount of people you get to meet and who you can help.

And putting what you have learnt in training to the test’.

How do you wind down if you’ve had an eventful shift?

‘I take notes for myself, talk to the supervisor and talk to my family’.

We dedicate this April’s blog to Stress Awareness Month and what CityWatch, as a company, do to ensure our staff are incentivised and supported.

The 2023 theme for Stress Awareness Month is Anxiety.

WorkSafe Victoria states that “Work-related stress describes an employee's stress response to work-related factors”. As a company compliant to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) CityWatch strives to provide and maintain a safe, supportive working environment that reduces health risks.

CityWatch’s management consult with our employees to identify hazards and risks associated with work-related stress, thus identifying where we can reduce anxiety. Collecting data through our reporting system, we address matters that directly affect or are likely to affect the health and safety of our employees.

Why we believe it is essential to be aware of stress

As a company CityWatch encourages motivation and professionalism in our staff. This can only occur when our employees feel not only appreciated, but also capable and safe. As an employer we attempt to offer a workplace with a progressive, empathetic and constructive approach to mental health. This means being aware of and open to addressing situations/providing support, particularly where stress levels can potentially blow out.

CityWatch is aware that ongoing stress affects performance, well-being, confidence and motivation in a negative way. If not resolved, stress can lead to out of character changes that may affect the quality of our team’s work.

We aim to help keep our staff feeling supported so they can continue to deliver an exceptional level of customer service. Job Changes/General Capability Issues

If the nature of an employee’s job changes, or there are performance concerns, CityWatch’s management will clarify the level of performance expected with our employee. We will then attempt to assist the employee through training and appropriate supervision so they can meet expectations. CityWatch approaches capability issues in an informal manner, to show our team we want them to succeed. Staff members will be given time and resources to improve, taking some pressure off so they can focus.

Personal Circumstance/Health Issues

Events outside of work can also put pressure on our employees. Personal Circumstances (say the death of a loved one) and health issues may cause employees to be under stress. And if they need time off, they may become anxious about the security of their job. If a situation is likely to be ongoing CityWatch will consult directly with employees to make a decision about future employment in their current role or, where circumstances permit, look at moving to a more suitable role.

CityWatch strives to improve our procedures in offering employee support. Our current stress management strategies take a holistic approach to well-being and include:

Financial Benefits Of Fire Prevention

When considering fire prevention planning, many businesses don’t take into account costs that may not be covered by insurance. Even if damage is minimal, getting back to work is more complex than replacing equipment and writing off stock. If the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) become involved it could be quite some time before you are permitted to operate again.

If a fire or environmental accident occurs at your site, the EP Act allows any person to apply to court for a breach of the Act. An EPA assessment can be enforced if:

‘There are localised environment complaints, such as noise or odour; and
a person’s interests are affected by alleged contravention or non-compliance’.

The application may be granted if:

‘The court is satisfied that:
the application would be in the public interest ; and
the person had requested in writing that the EPA take enforcement or compliance action’.

If you are found in breach, the EPA will order your business to take specific actions, which may include;

‘an order restraining a person / company from doing a particular activity;
an order requiring a person / company to take a specific action;
an order requiring the person / company to provide a financial assurance; and
a compensation order payable to the claimant, including for the injury, loss or damage suffered, and costs’.

Many do not realise that restraining operational activities can be applied, by the EPA, to all sites of your business. As well as bearing expected financial costs of a fire or chemical incident, you may be restricted from trading and thereby generating income to meet those costs not covered by insurance.

These costs may include;

Wages for workers who have been stood down.
Diminished income from sites that have been ordered to close.
Waste of production materials should their use be time-restricted.

While some may be able to bear the brunt of a short shut down, an EP order can extend to longer than a year, with businesses losing money as the process drags on. The psychological cost of stress + uncertainty can further take its toll on your workforce and customers. Our team can help reduce the chances of that occurring.

Phishing

SCAMS

What is it?: Like phishing, these are attacks designed to gather information for financial or other gains. They can come via email or even in shared posts that suggest you will gain prizes for doing very little.

For example: A recent trend in scam messages includes: Senders pretending to be a delivery company. They may ask for your address so they can deliver a package, which is information a legitimate company would already have.

How do we avoid it?

Again, approach any unsolicited or unusual emails with a healthy dose of scepticism. If you don't know why you're receiving the email, it may be a scam.
Ignore requests / communications from those you have no connection with
Be wary of emails asking to establish a relationship or for financial assistance. This includes those emails in which the recipient must 'store' a large sum of money in their account.
Be sceptical of competitions that have no direct connection to the company. For example: 'If company X sees this post, you will be in the running for free airline tickets/shopping vouchers/cash' campaigns on Facebook.
Avoid giving any personal information to unverified callers. Some may pretend to be from a company you know, asking to renew a subscription, which most companies do automatically online.

Malware

What is it?: Malware is short for ‘malicious software’. It generally refers to any software designed to attack your systems.

What does it do? As the name suggests, malware can do some damage. It can crack passwords, work as a trojan horse to install fake software, spam you, perform data theft or spread to destroy complete systems.

How do we avoid it?:

Invest in anti-viral software for extra protection
Update your computer/phone software regularly; dated software can be more easily attacked
Only file share when absolutely necessary
Be careful about clicking on links - particularly in pop-up windows, downloading attachments or images.
