Workplace Safety
Workplace Safety
Why is workplace safety important?
Legal compliance with safety codes is crucial in all workplaces across Australia. The loss of lives and the impact of injuries can be heartbreaking. It can also affect operations, causing expensive property damage, the destruction of essential information, and raising insurance premiums. We have seen the necessity for hygiene practices during COVID, with understaffing due to illness affecting supply chains and services.
Avoiding accidents and implementing safety infrastructure can save lives.
In Victoria in 2019, 183 workers were killed at work. The three most hazardous industries were identified as:
- Transport, postal and warehousing,
- Construction, and
- Agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Most of these fatalities were related to vehicle accidents, such as collisions. Other significant causes included falling from heights or being hit by falling objects. Many of these accidents could have been prevented.
Non-fatal workplace injuries occur in much higher numbers, with an average of 50 thousand+ in Australia wide each year.
How do we start improving workplace safety?
If you're looking to improve safety in your workplace, even starting may feel overwhelming – how do you prioritise hazard solutions when they are all essential? CityWatch's expert Fire Surveillance officers can take a load off by assessing your needs, identifying hazard areas, drafting solutions and educating staff. Our 24-hour monitoring systems identify incidents as they occur, enabling an immediate response.
Having an expert assess your space is essential as each workplace faces different hazards. For example, traffic safety is vital in avoiding accidents in a logistics warehouse. Workers should be able to see or hear vehicles coming, with drivers having a clear view of pedestrians to avoid a clash. WorkSafe Victoria identifies patient lifting, handling heavy objects, or moving furniture as potentially hazardous to employees in aged care. Slippages, fire hazards and falls can be an issue that also affects the general public, which could impact public liability premiums.
By tailoring an integrated solution covering access, monitoring and hazard reduction, we can help protect your staff, assets and members of the general public.
Our friendly team will strengthen workplace safety by:
- Reassessing your monitoring systems,
- Auditing your existing fire safety processes,
- Identifying fire hazards, including chemical storage,
- Educating staff in avoidance and response, and
- Making recommendations for improvements and policy.
CityWatch’s highly trained staff provide safety services at significant sites all over Melbourne. Check our Fire Surveillance Officers and Covid Workplace Safety pages for more information.
